Autumn Advice

Autumn Lawn Care (March-May)

Cool-Season Grasses:

  • Seeding/Overseeding: Autumn is the ideal time to overseed cool-season lawns to fill in bare patches and thicken the turf. The cooler temperatures and more consistent rainfall create perfect conditions for seed germination. Ensure good soil contact by aerating the lawn before overseeding.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser with an emphasis on phosphorus to encourage strong root development before winter. Autumn is critical for building the grass's reserves to survive the colder months.
  • Thatch Control: Excess thatch can block water and nutrients from reaching the roots. If your lawn has more than 1cm of thatch, consider dethatching or scarifying to remove the build-up.

Warm-Season Grasses:

  • Fertilising: Warm-season grasses will begin slowing their growth as temperatures cool. Apply a low-nitrogen fertiliser to help the lawn store nutrients and energy for winter dormancy.
  • Mowing: Gradually reduce your mowing frequency as growth slows. Keep the height on the shorter side (1-2cm) to prevent excessive thatch development, which can lead to pest and disease problems over winter.
  • Weed Control: Autumn is the perfect time to treat for broadleaf weeds before they can establish deep roots. Use selective herbicides to target problem areas.
