Winter Advice

Winter Lawn Care (June - August)

Cool-Season Grasses:

  • Mowing: Growth slows significantly in winter, so you can reduce mowing frequency to every 3-4 weeks. Keep your mower blades sharp and set the height at 5-6cm to avoid stressing the lawn during colder periods.
  • Aeration: Winter is an excellent time for aeration to relieve soil compaction, especially in high-traffic areas. This will improve drainage and allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively.
  • Fungus and Disease Monitoring: Cool-season grasses are more susceptible to fungal diseases like Snow Mold and Red Thread in cold, damp conditions. Keep an eye out for signs of disease, and consider applying fungicides if necessary.

Warm-Season Grasses:

  • Mowing: Warm-season grasses go dormant in winter, so mowing is rarely needed. However, you should keep the lawn clear of debris and leaves to prevent disease and ensure good air circulation.
  • Soil Care: Winter is a good time to test your soil's pH and apply lime if necessary. Couch grass thrives in slightly alkaline soil, and adjusting pH levels in winter ensures better growth in the spring.
  • Weed Control: Dormant warm-season grasses leave space for cool-season weeds to invade. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in late autumn or early winter to prevent weeds from establishing.
